DEAF AND DUMB MARRIAGE

On Monday afternoon the proceedings of the Deaf and Dumb Congress, which is in progress in Melbourne, were varied by a marriage. The contracting parties were Mr. W. E. Bostock, a mute delegate from Adelaide, and Miss Helen Robertson, of Melbourne, the bride being also deaf and dumb. The Rev. Alfred Jones performed the ceremony, the marriage service being interpreter in sign language by the president of the congress (Mr. E. J. D. Abraham). The event was clearly regarded as one of great importance in the mute community. Everyone showed a keen personal interest in the ceremony, and every hand in the hall was kept going, turning off pre-matrimonial jokes to the accompaniment of shrugs, pouts, nudges, and an occasional weird ejaculation.
