Coffee Taverns

Photograph of the Federal Coffee Palace, corner of King and Collins Streets, Melbourne, Australia, in 1890. Demolished in 1972. Coffee taverns or ‘coffee palaces’ were large hotels that did not serve alcohol. They were associated with the temperance movement, which aimed to reduce alcohol use. They were often large and ornate buildings.

Welcome to the Deaf History Collections

We extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors to our site, recognising the long, rich, complex and unjustly disregarded histories of First Nations peoples in Australia.
