Deaf Action Books, 1984

Collection

Deaf Action Books began in 1984 as a project of the ‘Concerned Deaf’ group in NSW, selling deaf-related books. It had an office and shop space in the Deaf Society of NSW building at Stanmore, soon moving into a space in the Gordon Davis Hostel next door. A few years later Deaf Action Books began selling technology items too, and changed its name to Deafness Resources Australia (DRA).

DRA merged with the small Queensland organisation Deaflink in 1995 and became part of Australian Communication Exchange (ACE). DRA remained a separate business unit within ACE for many years, until it was transferred to Deaf Australia, where it was re-branded The Auslan Shop in 2008.

This photo shows Dorothy Shaw and Graham Weir in the early Deaf Action Books office at Stanmore, around 1984-85.

Welcome to the Deaf History Collections

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of Country throughout Australia and pay our respects to Elders past and present. We extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors to our site, recognising the long, rich, complex and unjustly disregarded histories of First Nations peoples in Australia.
