Document: John Yeoman petition

In this letter to the Governor John Yeomans asks for land to be held by him in trust for his two children. The letter notes that his son Robert Yeomans is “Deaf and Dumb” and describes his daughter Charlotte as “an Idiot from … Birth”. However, “idiot” isn’t used in our sense of the word. Charlotte probably had some kind of intellectual disability.

We extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors to our site, recognising the long, rich, complex and unjustly disregarded histories of First Nations peoples in Australia.
