Jim Johnston on board the Hygeia, Melbourne, 1926

Collection

From the album of Jim and Eva Johnston. Jim is on the right. The Hygeia was a steamer built in the UK in 1890. It operated in Port Phillip Bay between Melbourne and Sorrento until demand for passenger trips plummeted during the Great Depression. The steamer was towed outside Port Phillip Heads and scuttled in 1931. (Source: Hygeia PSS (1912-1931), https://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?157225)

Welcome to the Deaf History Collections

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of Country throughout Australia and pay our respects to Elders past and present. We extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors to our site, recognising the long, rich, complex and unjustly disregarded histories of First Nations peoples in Australia.
