Code Switching

Code switching is when a signer or speaker switches between languages, dialects, or registers within a language. In the Deaf Community it used to be very common for the Auslan used in more formal settings to involve much more fingerspelling than the Auslan used in everyday interactions. You can see an example of this if you compare the Auslan used by Dot Shaw at the opening of the Stanmore Centre to the Auslan she uses in the Heritage in Our Hands series (11 minutes 20 seconds in this video).

Welcome to the Deaf History Collections

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of Country throughout Australia and pay our respects to Elders past and present. We extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visitors to our site, recognising the long, rich, complex and unjustly disregarded histories of First Nations peoples in Australia.
